Helping Hands

It's a big world out there!  And there's a world of need that goes along with it.  From putting a new roof on the home of a vet returning from Iraq to putting a smile on the face of a child in Africa, Timothy Spillane, Inc. has tried to reach out and meet that need when and wherever we can. The initial desire to do so caught us almost by surprise when a tile manufacturer told us about a poor church in need of a new roof almost two decades ago...

We had very little experience in tile roofing at the time, but in the early 1990’s we agreed to install a new tile roof on an old church in a run down section of Easton, PA. We gained some good experience laying tile there, and – as we volunteered our services to the church – we learned something about the power of giving, too. We’ve endeavored to lend a helping hand when we can ever since.

While roofing is what we do, a lot of our outreach has little or nothing to do with our craft. Donna Spillane takes leave from our office when she can to volunteer with Uwchlan Ambulance Corp. Since she was certified as an EMT, Donna has been running on the ambulance and helping provide emergency medical services to the local community. In our business, we’ve seen enough ambulances called to jobsites, and – while we don’t want to see Donna and her ambulance on any of our jobs any time soon – we’re glad to know she’s out there lending a helping hand. For more information about Uwchlan Ambulance, if you’d like to make a donation to their work, or to become a volunteer yourself, go to http://www.station87.com/

Tim Spillane has been an active advocate in the fight against HIV/AIDS for years. He has spoken at the 2006 International AIDS Conference in Toronto; served on the Dinner Committee for the 2006 Drexel University College of Medicine’s “Black Tie – White Coat Ball” that raised nearly $800,000.00 for AIDS research; and has given presentations about the global HIV/AIDS crisis at high schools, colleges, community groups and churches. He also founded the non-profit organization, the Marley AIDS Advocacy, to help raise awareness among students about the AIDS epidemic.

Tim’s also an avid bicyclist, so when he found out about a group that uses it bikes to raise awareness and money for global health causes, he couldn’t resist getting in on the action. He served as Director of Fundraising for the 2007 Ride For World Health team, and even joined the riders for a leg of their annual bike-across-the-US fund raising tour. This is a pretty ambitious group of (mostly) young people and they’ve got a great mission. See them at www.rideforworldhealth.org

Perhaps what we’re most proud of is our work with the student group, the Global Medical Relief Program. We helped raise the needed money and provided some construction expertise to get this group’s vision of building a community health center in Ghana, Africa off the ground. Today, the newly-completed center is providing basic health services for mothers and their children in a rural part of West Africa. It’s pretty cool being part of something that helps put a smile on kids’ faces!
